KDP Chairman to Andy Barr: Be Careful of the Company you Keep
Upon learning that Republican Andy Barr, previously failed and current candidate Kentucky’s 6th Congressional District, is moving up in the National Republican Campaign Committee’s “Young Guns Program,” the Chairman of the Kentucky Democratic Party is recommending that Barr take a close look at the company he is keeping.
“I’d like to offer my heartfelt congratulations to Andy Barr for continuing to take part in a program headed by a Congressman currently under investigation and founded by a Congressman who wants to destroy healthcare for Kentucky seniors,” said Dan Logsdon, Chairman of the Kentucky Democratic Party.
Barr, a convicted criminal who has lied about his criminal record in the past, recently touted his ascension in the NRCC’s “Young Gun Program,” a reality TV-like contest that ensures Republican Congressional candidates cut ideological muster. However, despite the NRCC’s demands that candidate’s toe the far-right line on issues, the organization is apparently more lax on ethical issues concerning their leadership.
The Chairman of the NRCC, Pete Session of Texas, is currently under investigation by the House Ethics Committee. Sessions is being investigated for receiving a “sweetheart” mortgage from defunct financial lender Countrywide Financial.
Additionally, the “Young Gun Program,” which looks to stack the United States Congress with like-minded ideologues, was founded by House Budget Chairman Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, author of a budget that would destroy Medicare and Social Security. The Ryan Plan, which Barr openly stated he would support in 2010, would turn Medicare into a voucher system leaving millions of seniors, including older Kentuckians, with limited options for their healthcare.
“Andy Barr needs to take a good hard look at the folks he’s standing with and ask if those people are looking out for the best interests of Kentuckians,” Logsdon said. “Right now Andy Barr’s palling around with a couple of Congressman – one who’s under investigation and one who thinks your sick grandma is a freeloader. So far, I’d say Andy Barr’s campaign is off to a less-than-stellar start.”
