Head Start Teacher: Hampton Should Apologize for "Indoctrination" Statement
Posted September 25, 2015
FRANKFORT, KY -- In response to Republican candidate for Lt. Governor Jenean Hampton's recent statement that Head Start is used for "indoctrination," today Jennifer Hawkins, a former Head Start teacher in Kentucky, issued the following statement:
"As a former Head Start teacher, I am deeply offended by Ms. Hampton's comments regarding the Head Start program. This program comprehensively focuses on students and their families. I've seen firsthand how Head Start can set the stage for a child's lifelong success, and I've watched children learn, grow and thrive when they have the opportunity to participate in this program and other quality early childhood programs. It was bad enough when Matt Bevin said that early learning programs like Head Start 'serve no purpose,' but Ms. Hampton's statement is simply deplorable. On behalf of the educators who work in early childhood education and the children who benefit from it, I would respectfully request Ms. Hampton apologize for this remark."
