Message from the Chair
Every four years, when the country elects a president, the Kentucky Democratic Party (KDP) undertakes a reorganization process to build and strengthen the party from the grassroots level to the State Central Committee.
With the precinct conventions and the County/Legislative District Conventions behind us, I would like to thank all of the Democrats who participated and made the conventions a huge success. These conventions selected the individuals who lead the party at the local level and serve as the backbone of Kentucky's strong Democratic organization. Now it's time to get ready for the County/Legislative District Caucus which will take place on May 31st at 10 am at locations determined by each County Chair.
Any Democrat will be able to attend, run, and/or nominate delegates at these County/Legislative District Caucuses. The delegates elected that day will then attend the Congressional District Caucus/State Convention, June 7th in Lexington, to select the national delegates who will represent Kentucky at the Democratic National Convention in Denver. The delegates will also elect Kentucky's members of the Electoral College. The Kentucky Electoral College, which casts the ballots which elect the next president, will include two at-large electors and two alternates and one elector and one alternate from each Congressional District to make up the eight electoral votes Kentucky is allotted.
The organization of the KDP, and the commitment of those who have chosen to serve, is more important this year than any time in recent memory; in addition to electing a president, Kentucky will vote for a U.S. Senator, 6 Congressmen, 19 state senators, and all 100 state representatives. Democrats across the Commonwealth will have the opportunity to elect leaders who share our Kentucky values.
Remember, to become a delegate to the National Convention, you must have your Declaration of Candidacy form filled out and turned into the Kentucky Democratic Party Headquarters by May 15th at 5:00 pm. Get involved with your local Democratic Party, make a difference, and help elect Democrats in '08. I look forward to seeing you at the State Convention on June 7 in Lexington and hopefully in Denver in August.
